Before 1980 Bolgheri was an area well known for agriculture. Wine was produced as a food, looking for the largest possible quan- tity from the vineyards. The only producer of quality wine was Tenuta San Guido with Sassicaia ( first vintage is 1968 ). All the rest was table wine based on Sangiovese grapes. In the 80s other producers, Lodovico and Piero Antinori, Meletti Cavallari, Eugenio Campolmi and Michele Satta started a high quality production of wine. The DOC was born in 1995, Michele Satta was one of the founder.
